At the invitation of the Old Boys Association of Colombo branch of Mahinda College, a special report was compiled by EDEX Careers to explore and collate all relevant and available information on career guidance and vocational training opportunities for school leavers in the Western and Southern provinces of Sri Lanka.
The research was carried out mainly in the Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts. This information was gathered within a duration of 4 weeks in July/August 2015.
Main sources of information were taken by visiting the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka (VTA), “Nipunatha Piyasa” at Narahenpitya and the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority of Sri Lanka (NAITA) at Rajagiriya which is run under the Ministry of Highways, Higher Education & Investment Promotions and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Skills Development respectively.
Both NAITA and VTA have training centers throughout the island in all districts which covers a wide range of courses in different fields. Furthermore, NAITA has a wide reached apprenticeship program partnered with industry organizations who guide and train the students on the job in accordance to the apprenticeship scheme by NAITA.
This report covers over 600 courses offered among 32 training centers which are falling under 6 vocation training institutes in Western and Southern provinces of Sri Lanka. The courses listed are including full time, part time and apprenticeship courses which covers wide variety of over 30 fields.
