EDEX Sithuwam has been an integral component of EDEX since last few years providing opportunity
for youth to display their aesthetic skills in the domain of painting and be recognized for their
talent. To date, Sithuwam has been a single platform taking the form of an island wide arts
competition and exhibition of paintings from every corner of the island.
Development of the aesthetic skills of youth in the art form of “paintings” has not
received much attention of the years with educators, private public entities giving
more prominence to professional and vocational streams due to the commercial need and
business feasibility. However, judging from the high quality entries received for the
Sithuwam exhibition, the existence of talent in this domain is abundant in the country.
The major bottlenecks of not having a commercial value for the products if individuals
and the lack of a professional recognition and support for individuals to continue in
this stream are identified as the stumbling block in this domain.
Henceforth, creating suitable pillars from EDEX Sithuwam to surface the skills of
individuals and thereby help Sri Lankan youth to be globally competitive and also
assist them in creating commercial value of their outputs reinforces the vision of EDEX Sithuwam.
